Questions and Answers on Business Recovery Services
What does the Open Solutions Business Recovery Services (BRS) program cover?
The BRS program covers the core hardware that is pertinent in retrieving your members' information. In other words, if your credit union declares a disaster, Open Solutions will provide an IBM RS/6000, compatible tape drive and master terminal, switch, print server, and a receipt printer to access this core information. Other servers, will also be configured and delivered depending on the terms of your particular BRS contract. However, it will be the responsibility of your credit union to provide electrical hook-ups, communications, and program/backup tapes and CDs.
What constitutes a disaster?
A disaster is defined as follows: The IBM RS/6000 or other servers on BRS are beyond normal maintenance repair due to a natural disaster, a disaster within the building, or vandalism.
If I have to declare a disaster, who do I call?
If your credit union must declare a disaster, immediately notify the support department of Open Solutions and they will get a machine ready to ship to you. You will also need to let the support department know if you want the servers shipped to a location other than your current main office address, as well as informing them if you intend to send your last program tape and backup tape to Open Solutions to load on the rental Disaster Recovery Machine (DRM), or if you plan to load these on-site. Shipment of the backup tapes to Open Solutions may affect the delivery of the servers, but when they arrive at your site, less time will be required to have the database subsequently up and running.
Will Open Solutions help me come online?
Open Solutions provides telephone support to aid in restoring online services to your credit union. On-site consultation service is available through which a qualified technician from Open Solutions is on-site to help restore these services; however, this is a billable service. (A technician will only arrive on-site once the designated area is deemed safe for travel.) If your credit union elects, you may send the program/backup tape to Open Solutions and we will load the tapes and bring the system online before shipping the DRM to your designated location. Of course, this alternative may affect delivery time.
How do I replace my destroyed IBM and other servers?
Although you pay a monthly premium for the Business Recovery Service, this does not count towards the purchase/replacement of the new servers. Your credit union will need to work through your insurance company for the funding of any new servers. The sales and purchasing departments of Open Solutions will be available for support in acquiring the new units.
What is testing time used for?
Your credit union is able to test its disaster recovery plan and procedures, and verify the operation of critical applications, directly on Open Solutions' disaster recovery server system. You are allowed sixteen (16) hours of test time, used at your convenience, at the corporate headquarters of Open Solutions in Orem, Utah. The time is coordinated through our information services department.
What does my monthly premium get me?
Your monthly premium payment guarantees several things:
1) the BRS servers will be shipped from our Open Solutions’ location within twenty-four to forty-eight (24-48) hours after a disaster has been declared;
2) availability of a technician at the main office of Open Solutions to assist in the restoring process (on-site consultation is available but is classified as a billable charge);
3) availability on an annual basis of testing time for your credit union. Also, Open Solutions will provide a copy of its “Business Recovery Plan,” along with resources to assist your credit union in formulating its own disaster/data recovery plan. Additionally, Open Solutions has three disaster sites, with machines at each location, to cover a disaster situation, and we will store program/backup tapes at our location, for off-site storage, should your credit union create these tapes and ship them us.
Are there additional costs associated with BRS other than the monthly maintenance fee?
Yes, some costs are not covered under the monthly premium. For example, there is a daily rental rate of twenty-five percent (25%) of the monthly premium for the temporary BRS servers. It usually takes between two to three (2-3) weeks to acquire a new IBM server. Open Solutions will provide a qualified technician to travel on-site if requested by your credit union, but the time the technician spends on-site is billable at $1,500 per day, plus expenses. The new replacement servers are also billable. Your credit union will be responsible for all shipping costs, as well as all other incidental costs.
